MANAGEMENT MAJOR

A Management major allows students to learn a wide range of managerial techniques and insights. This major is for those students who would like to become future managers in business and government organizations. Management positions include directors of administration, human resource managers, production managers, product design coordinators, contract negotiators, logistics & transportation managers, and project managers. This curriculum has been divided into four concentrations: Human Resource Management, Supply Chain Management, Acquisition Management, and General Management.

Human Resource professionals manage the organization's personnel and human resource programs. They focus on employee training and development, employees and labor relationships, and administering wages, salaries, and benefits. Students in this field have obtained positions with federal agencies, local government, major defense and aerospace firms, hospitals, small businesses, and Fortune 500 companies.

Supply Chain Managers plan, implement and control the operations of the supply chain, moving everything from raw material for production to finished products for consumers. There are many positions in supply chain management, which include managing the logistics and transportation functions, planning and forecasting demand, and advising project managers on supply chain issues. All companies that deal with products and services have supply chain managers. There are many career possibilities for students with supply chain management expertise.

Acquisition Managers' main responsibility is to negotiate major purchases and contracts with suppliers and customers. This includes contract research and development, administration, risk management, and monitoring performance. They negotiate the best terms for the company and coordinate the acquisition process with members of the supply chain. This is a great career path, since many firms need professionals to manage their large acquisitions which may cost millions or billions of dollars.

General Management focuses more on the development of a broad knowledge in the functional areas of management rather than specializing in a particular field. This concentration gives students the flexibility to customize their major to fit their individual career ambitions. For example, students considering starting their own businesses or careers in international business may wish to select a series of courses that will support their specific career plans.
